URPoint Details

A busy market town with a cobbled square, where George Borrow, the author of Wild Wales in 1862, described it as ‘about the pleasantest little town, in which I have halted in the course of my wanderings’.

The beautiful upper valley of the Towy should be explored and not far from town is Twm Shon Catti’s Cave where Thomas Jones alias Moetheu, bard, geologist and thief (1530-1620) the Welsh Dick Turpin ended up marrying a rich widow and became a J.P.

The rivers Bran, the Cwydderig and the Tywi (Towy) all meet at Llandovery, the market centre of the Upper Tywi valley.

Pleasant Georgian and Victorian buildings are interspersed with many charming public houses.
Llanymddyfri ‘the church amid the waters', aptly describes this delightful little town with its picturesque ruined castle on a mound overlooking the River Bran is situated in the valley of the Towy and is a typically Welsh town.

The parish church of St Mary's-on-the-Hill (Llanfair-ar-y-bryn) is much restored but still retains its fine tie-beam roof and barrel-vaulted chancel.
