URPoint Details
A peaceful village of whitewashed houses has an important tale to tell dating from the 18th-century by the local vicar. Distressed by the ignorance and illiteracy of his parishioners, and of Welsh people in general, he started a system of travelling schools.
Teachers travelled from parish to parish teaching children and adults of all ages to read the Bible and it was claimed that about 150,000 people learned to read through this scheme.
