The finest church in Wales after St David’s and is reputed to have been founded in the 6th century by St Dyfrig or by a disciple St Teilo the first abbot to whom it is dedicated.
The present building was begun in 1107 by Urban the first Norman bishop has an Early English nave and a geometrical lady chapel.
The west front is Early English in style and flanked by towers.
The north, left-hand tower built by Jasper Tudor, Earl of Pembroke (d1495), Henry VII’s uncle.
The south tower collapsed in a storm in 1703 was rebuilt in 1869 by John Prichard a pupil of Pugin.
The north and south doorways of the nave are late Norman and the late Norman arch is very grand.
