Llanbister stands on a steep hill above the River Ithon and was the scene of bloody quarrel in the 15th century between members of the Vaughan family.
John Vaughan killed David Vaughan, and David's sister took revenge by attending an archery competition, dressed as a man. When her turn came shoot, she turned and shot John, and then escaped during the ensuing confusion.
