URPoint Details
In 1861 labourers from Ely and Littleport faced with unemployment, low wages and soaring food prices attacked houses and people in the area. This series of events became known as the Ely and Littleport riots. Over 50 stood trial including two women. Eventually 16 were deported and 5 hanged at the gibbet in St John's Rad, Ely. They were buried in a common grave at St Mary's church. A plaque can be seen on the outside wall at the rear of the church.
