URPoint Details
Church of St Mary the Virgin, 3m SW of Manningtree off A137. (Redundant Churches trust). Key available nearby.
Down lanes in broad, flat Essex farmland is this delightful country church. The nave is Norman, the chancel of about 1300, and the timber framed porch 16th century. The colourful mixture of building materials in the big 15th century tower gives it a marvellous texture. There is an octagonal font, carved with charmingly rustic emblems of the four Evangelists and Tudor roses. Two stained glass windows commemorate the martyred King Charles I and Archbishop Laud. This is a Grade II* listed building
