An ancient Royal Burgh containing the fine ruins of a royal palace of Linlithgow Palace built in 1425 for James I of Scotland the birthplace of James V in 1512 and Mary, Queen of Scots in 1542.
Near the palace is the parish church of St Michael, dating from the 13th century but rebuilt in 1424 after a fire. It is one of the finest churches in Scotland, and the oldest bell dates from 1490.
