For over 1300 years the cathedral has been a major centre of worship in the Midlands. The first cathedral, built to house the shrine of St Chad in 700 AD, was replaced by the Norman Cathedral begun in 1085, while the present Gothic Cathedral was built between 1195 and 1330. The reformation saw the destruction of the shrine of St Chad and during the Civil War, the fabric of the Cathedral was badly damaged. Restoration, begun in 1660, has continued ever since.

The Cathedral houses a number of treasures including the 8th century illuminated manuscript, the Lichfield Gospels, the medieval tiled floor of the Library, the 16th century Herkentode windows of the Lady Chapel and the sculptures by Sir Francis Chantry and Sir Jacob Epstein.
