Samuel Johnson was born here in 1709 and died in 1784. Amongst his literary achievements he compiled the English Dictionary in 1755.
Another notable citizen was Elias Ashmole who founded the Ashmoleum Museum in Oxford in 1677.
Another famous son was David Garrick the actor. In 1736 Dr Johnson then a schoolmaster at the grammar school taught him Latin and Greek.
