The church of St John sub Castro in Lewes, is one of the most beautiful churches in Lewes and stands almost opposite Anne of Cleves House. 12th century nave with roof dating from the 16th century, there are some Victorian stained glass windows of interest. The black marble memorial to Gundred, wife of William de Warenne in the Victorian Chapel is dated 1145. The tower dates from 1714-38. St John's was the guesthouse for the Priory until the 13th century when it became Southover Parish Church.
