Set high on open moorland, with a green and a church with a Saxon chancel arch.
The village has a typical North Riding main street with a wide lawn and the church of St Mary’s stands forlorn at the bottom of a glen beside Levisham Beck.
The church of St John the Baptist was built in 1884, due to the steep descent of St Mary’s church.
