The Abbey was founded on the Minsmere marshes in 1182, and moved from its original site in 1363. An octagonal brick gate-turret is all that remains. For hundreds of years the church was used as a barn and the abbey buildings as a farm until in 1918 it was restored as a House of Prayer by Ellen Wrightson. Built into the nave and north aisle of the cloister is a dwelling used as a retreat.
