Situated on the Grand Union Canal, the town has a wide Georgian high street, charming mews shops, an ancient street market with early 15th century cross an impressive Victorian railway tunnel built in 1838 lies west of the canal. It was in this area that the Great Train Robbery occurred in 1963.

Opposite the Cross is the early Victorian white building of Classical design is the Swan Hotel.

In North Street is the town's most impressive building that of Holly Lodge built in the late 17th century of blue and red brick with two cross gables. Just past it is the Friend's Meeting House of 1789 with wooden cross windows and nearby are the Wilkes Almshouses of yellow brick with gables.

In Lake Street is the Unicorn Inn dating from the 17th century is three stories high and nine bays long.

The spire of All Saint's Church can be seen from quite a distance and the town's market cross dates from the early 15th century.

The town has a variety of attractions with river trips, working steam railway and Stockgrove Country Park.
