URPoint Details
St John the Baptist, (Churches Conservation Trust) was built in the Gothic Revival style between 1632 and 1634 at the expense of John Harrison, a noted merchant. Splendid contemporary fittings, reflecting Elizabethan and Jacobean taste, include the screen, pews and a pulpit with its tester. 19th century demolition threats lead to interventions by Norman Shaw and others, but most were compatible and the outcome is a beautiful and interesting church dating from a turbulent period when very few were built.
Grade I listed building.
