A little green runs steeply down to the meandering River Esk which can be crossed by stepping stones, or a single arch stone bridge dating from the mid-18th century.
Stone cottages, roofed with slate or tiles, hem the lane that leads up the dale towards Danby.
One bears a carved inscription ‘Loyal Order of Ancient Shepherds’, with lodge insignia and the date 1873 in Roman numerals.
