Established during the 12th century, the castle underwent many transformations under a long series of occupiers, which included the Anglo-Norman de Brian family and, in the 16th century by Sir John Parrot.
Two of its drum towers are incorporated in the magnificent castellated residence erected in 1582 by Sir John Parrot, Vice-Admiral of Wales who is reputed to be the natural son of Henry VIII.
