URPoint Details

Dylan Thomas said of Laugharne, ‘this timeless, mild, beguiling island of a town ...', and he will always be linked with this charming, place where he lived for 16 years in the Georgian boathouse perched on Cliff Walk.
The poet is buried in a simple grave in the churchyard.
Many characters in his poem Under Milk Wood were probably based on local people and the play is still regularly performed in the town.

The ruined castle on the water's edge was once an important strategic bastion, and then converted to a lavish Tudor residence by Sir John Perrot, illegitimate son of Henry VIII.

In addition to the castle, the town has an attractive old harbour, a 13th-century church and a smart 18th-century town hall with a white tower and belfry. It is here that the ‘Portreeve’ resides — an official post left over from Norman times. He wears a chain of golden cockleshells and has a retinue who attend him at town functions.
