The only Royal Burgh granted a charter in 1502, by William the Lion, and sits by the Leader Water in Lauderdale.

There is good fishing here in the Leader water and other streams. Lauder was the scene in 1482 of a plot to overthrow James III and several of his followers were hanged from the former Lauder Bridge by the Earl of Angus.

James Guthrie, a minister from 1642 to 1649. He was executed in 1661 and the first Covenanter martyr to be recorded on the Greyfriars churchyard in Edinburgh
