Lastingham

Lastingham , England

URPoint Details

Stone houses, the magnificent Church of St Mary in the centre make up this charming little village.

Halfway along the main street is a fountain with the inscription CEDD, ABBIE LASTINGA FUNDATOR, AD654.
The fountain was built before 1100, recalls that St Cedd founded an abbey originally called Laestingau.

Although the original abbey is presumed to have been destroyed by the Vikings, Abbot Stephen of Whitby was allowed by William the Conqueror to settle here in the 11th century.
When Stephen built his new church he built a crypt over the burial place of St Cedd, and this 11th century crypt survives.
