Situated in the deep valley of the North Esk River it was here that Scott lived in a cottage for six years between 1798 and 1804.
In the churchyard of the ruined Norman church are the graves of William Drummond the poet and Henry Dundas, 1st Viscount Melville a famous late 18th century benevolent and virtual ruler of the country whose home of Melville Castle is now a hotel.
