A popular Clyde coast yachting resort and holiday destination, on the Gogo Water and Largs Bay sheltered by hills that rise more than 1700ft. To the south of town is the round tower (commonly known as 'The Pencil') situated at Bowen Craig, commemorating a battle which Norsemen failed to have a permanent landing in 1263. As a result Haakon, the King of Norway lost the Hebrides and the Isle of Man. To the northeast stood the former Brisbane House birthplace of Sir Thomas Brisbane, governor of New South Wales and who gave his name to the capital of Queensland, Brisbane.
