The main town of Eskdale nestling in the hills and famous for its woollens was a burgh of barony in 1621.
Fishing is popular in the River Esk, Ewes Water and Liddel.
Johnny Armstrong of Gilknockie was a popular hero and known as a Reiver (gentleman cattle rustler). He met his end when James V invited him to a hunt and from there he and his men were hanged at Caerlanrig Castle.
