URPoint Details
Leaving the busy A1 at Toplers Hill, with its well known landmark, the water tower, and travelling two miles down the road you come to the long village of Langford, or Longford as it was originally known.
In past years the main industry was agriculture with most of the men working in the fields.
A lot of women did too, especially at ‘peasing time’.
The pay was very poor the most one got for picking a 40lb bag of peas was 1/9d, which was reduced to 1/- at the height of the season. A good picker could get 5 or 6 bags a day.
