The village named after the Roman fort of Longovicium, built in AD122, on a hill to the southwest, covering about 6 acres to guard part of Dere Street, the Roman road between Hadrian’s Wall and York.
The Church of All Saints was built by the Normans using stone from the fort and Roman pillars support the north-aisle arcade.
A 5ft high Roman altar, unearthed locally stands in the wide south porch. In the south window there are three superb pieces of 13th century stained glass.
