URPoint Details
A medieval building with Norman keep, John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster and the father of Henry IV enlarged the castle, which was later fortified by Elizabeth I as a defence against the Spanish Armada. The gateway, towers and banqueting hall were added in the 14th century.
During the Civil War it was a Parliamentary stronghold and continues to house the court and local jail and has done so since the 18th century.
