Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway - Cumbria

Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway - Cumbria

Haverthwaite

URPoint Details

At the southern tip of Windermere. Trains run at Easter and daily from May to October. Santa specials in December. Suitable for disabled visitors. Licensed restaurant, engine shed, car park, refreshments and gift shop. Through tickets available for train and boat trips.

From the old country station at Haverthwaite the hard working steam locomotives haul the trains on this steeply graded railway. Originally this Furness Railway branch carried passengers and freight from Ulverston to Lakeside, but now the only part remaining is the 3½ mile section, through the beautiful Leven Valley via Newby Bridge to the terminus at Lakeside. Here connections are made with "the Windermere Steamers" which follows the 10½ mile length of Lake Windermere. Passengers can choose either a return journey on the train only, or, to make an unbelievable day out, this can be combined with the lake cruise. The journey can be broken at either Bowness or Ambleside, before returning to Lakeside to enjoy once more the nostalgic sight and sound of steam at work.
