URPoint Details
The church was built in 1500 by James IV, in memory of Our Lady who had saved him from drowning.
As the Border was only 300 yards away and in constant dispute, he ordered it built to withstand fire and flood hence the all-stone construction of the kirk, stone pews and no wooden rafters.
The Warden of East March met regularly in the parish to resolve disputes between Scotland and England. In 1560, a copy of the last peace treaty between them was signed in Ladykirk, marking the end of sporadic warfare.
