For many generations, Kisimul was the stronghold of the Macneils of Barra, widely noted for their lawlessness and piracy and led by chiefs like Ruari the Turbulent, who boldly seized ships of subjects of Queen Elizabeth I of England.
The castle is over 550 years old and legend has it, that it dates back to the 11th century.
Restoration was commenced in 1938 by Robert Lister Macneil of Barra and completed in 1972.
