URPoint Details
‘Kirton - held together with rivets’, so it was said in the local White Horse inn as there were more people here with the surname of Rivett, at one time twelve in all.
There once was a thriving port called Guston at Kirton Creek which was part of the area called Goseford, a focal point of the old Hundred of 'Colneis' which included Walton, Felixstowe, Kirton and Falkenham.
King Edward I and Edward III are reported to have been Lords of the Manor at Walton and used Kingsfleet as a haven for their ships, and also to enjoy deer hunting in Falkenham Woods!
The Anglo-Saxons used a ford over the river at Kingsfleet and called the area Goseford – a ford haunted by geese.
There are two churches St Mary and St Martin at Kirton and St Ethelbert’s at Falkenham.
