A town of narrow streets and grey-stone buildings Kirkwall was originally named Kirkjuvagr (church bay). The cathedral dedicated to St Magnus was founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald the Norse ruler of Orkney. The Earl’s Palace was built in 1600 for the Earl of Orkney, Patrick Stewart, who was executed in 1614.
