Originally founded as a town on the Roman Antonine Wall built around AD140, it became a royal burgh in the 12th century.
The old name of the town was once known as Caerpentulach recalling one of the forts on the Roman Wall.
The Church of St Mary was built in the 1644 on a site of an earlier chapel.
