There is a collection of fine and decorative arts of local and national importance.

There is also an outstanding collection of 18th-20th century Scottish paintings and probably the largest public collection of works (outside the National Galleries of Scotland), by William McTaggart and the Scottish colourist S J Peploe.

There is an award winning permanent display, 'Changing Places' which tells the story of the social, natural and industrial heritage of the area.
