Situated at the head of the loch, with road access from Tomdoun, and where the narrow road descends to the loch by means of a steep descent (1 in 6) amid a wilderness of glaciated, grey rocks on the rugged slopes of Sgurr nan Eugallt rising to 2,933ft to the west and Sgurr a’Mhoraire at 3,365ft to the east.
The view from the summit is one of the loveliest in the Highlands taking the whole length of the loch and stretching towards the Coolins in Skye.
Prince Charles Edward wandered in these lonely mountains after his defeat at Culloden in 1746.
The loch known as the Loch of Hell is a sea loch on the west coast opposite Isle Oronsay and noted for its gloomy and wild appearance.
Ben Screel standing at 3,196ft and Lairven at 3,343ft sits on the shore.
