Kingston Lisle

Kingston Lisle , England

URPoint Details

A small village on the edge of the Vale of the White Horse where the Downs rise to 750ft, has an 18th century manor house and a mainly 14th century church.
The interior of the church has a nave dating from 1200, and it is the medieval wall paintings that bring people to this little church. St Peter and St Paul are painted on the jambs of the east window, and on the north wall Herod’s Feast with Salome dancing on her hands is still visible.

The Blow Hole stone was brought down from White Horse Hill and is about 3ft high and made of red sarsen. In Tom Brown’s Schooldays, the stone is described as being perforated by ‘two or three queer rat holes’. If blown correctly they produce an eerie sound, and it is said that King Alfred summoned his armies in this way.
