King's Sutton

King's Sutton

URPoint Details

A charming village with its green complete with stocks and the Church of St Peter and St Paul’s graceful spire at a height of 198ft can be seen for miles.

The village was during the 17th and 18th century when a mineral water spa from the Well of St Rumbold at Astrop Park was popular in healing the sick and crippled.

St Rumbold, the shortest lived of all saints was said to have been born in Walton Grounds just south of the village in the middle of the 7th century. His mother was married to a pagan prince of Northumberland. The baby died three days after he was born, but not before he had spoken aloud. He stated he was a Christian, and declared his belief in the Trinity, and also gave a sermon. His legend is created a replica of the well, standing at the roadside near the park, and in a stone font in the village church in which he was supposedly baptised.

At Blacklands, the site of an extensive Roman settlement, was a royal estate in Saxon times.
