An industrial town known for its iron founding and the manufacture of worsted cloth and chemicals, sitting on the banks of the River Garnock with a Mercat Cross topped with a rare wooden cross.
To the southeast lies Eglinton Castle a late 18th century dwelling where in 1839 a great medieval tournament took place and Napoleon III one of the Knights took part to bring about the revival of the Age of Chivilary.
