Situated at the northwest of the Campsie Fells among which Earl’s Seat rises to 1,896ft and Dumgoyne stands at 1,401ft.
In the village is an obelisk to the memory of George Buchannan, the historian, scholar and tutor to James VI who was born here in 1506.
Just to the northwest near the small of village of Gartness is the Pot of Gartness, a cascade and ravine on the Endrick Water.
