No dogs allowed. Disabled parking 300m from entrance uneven surface alternatively visitors may make arrangements in advance to park on Castle Green cobblestones at admission point. Access to Castle: kitchen area and Great Hall accessible to wheelchair users upper floors mainly reached by spiral staircases many good viewpoints. Grounds: garden area accessible with impacted gravel paths and smooth grass benches provided special tape tour and braille guide available flower garden and bird song (note) parts of the site have uneven surfaces, steep slopes and steps tape tour with hearing loop available shop via one step and space is restricted. Exhibition has easy access.

The dramatic red sandstone ruins of this great castle rise above rich green pastureland, with massive walls up to 20 feet thick and a 12th century keep. There are impressive remains of the state rooms built and furnished for Elizabeth I's visits by Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester, who was the Queen's favourite. There is a site exhibition.
