Joseph Mallord William Turner, RA born 23 April 1775 at Covent Garden was an English Romantic landscape painter, watercolourist and printmaker.
He started his illustrious career with Fishermen at Sea, oil on canvas in 1796 and completed many wonderful works of art including The Battle of Trafalgar, oil on canvas in 1822, The Grand Canal, Venice, oil on canvas 1834 and in 1844 Rain, Steam and Speed and 'The Great Western Railway, oil on canvas.
Turner was an extremely prolific artist who left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 paper works. The Tate Gallery in London produces the most comprehensive and up to date catalogue of Turner works held in both public and private collections worldwide.
