Jonathan Swift, born on 30 November 1667 in Dublin. He went to England and wrote ‘A Tale of a Tub’ in 1704, although published anonymously it has been attributed to him.

He wrote many essays between 1704 and 1710. He returned to Ireland and became Dean of St Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin, a post he held until he died.

He wrote very little during this time except for ‘A Modest Proposal’ and ‘Drapier’s Letters’.

He began his most famous work in 1721, finished it four years later ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ it was published anonymously in 1726.

He died in Dublin on 19 October, 1745 and is buried in his beloved cathedral. On the wall next to his coffin is the epitaph he wrote for himself. ‘The body of Jonathan Swift, Doctor of Sacred Theology, dean of this cathedral church, is buried here, where fierce indignation can no more lacerate his heart. Go, traveler, and imitate, if you can, one who strove with all his strength to champion liberty’.
