John Hampden born c. 1595, at Hampden House, was an English politician was a Parliamentary leader against Charles I. During the Battle of Chalgrove Field, Hampden was mortally wounded in the shoulder (some sources claim by two carbine balls, others by shrapnel from his own pistol exploding) which shattered the bone and forced him to leave the field. He reached Thame, survived six days, and died on 24 June 1643.
