Bunyan was imprisoned for three months on a charge of devilishly and perniciously abstained from attending Church Service and that he had several unlawful meetings in January 1661.
Bunyan could have been released on condition that he would not preach again in public, but he said to the Judge Sir John Keeling 'If I were out of prison today, I would preach the gospel again tomorrow, by the help of God'.
He was sentenced to three months, to be followed by transportation, if he did not conform. Lord Hategood, a character in the trial of Faithful at Vanity Fair in Pilgrims Progress, was probably depicting Sir John Keeling.
