For hundreds of years Jedburgh was a battleground in the battles between the Scots and the English. The Castle dates from the 12th century but was destroyed in 1409 by the Scots. There is abundant fishing on the Rivers Teviot, Jed, Oxnam and Kale. Blackfriars Church dates from 1746 and reconstructed in 1818 has an ornate iron lantern set in the portico. There are many places of interest including the three-arched 16th century bridge off Canongate and some houses show the characteristic crow-stepped gables. Many famous people have frequented the town including Robert Burns who once lodged in Canongate, Prince Charles Edward stayed in Blackhills Close and Wordsworth and his sister visited a house in Abbey Close.
