James Aloysius Joyce, born February 2, 1882 in Dublin, was a prodigious writer of distinctive style. He perferred life on the Continent to Ireland, in his later life, and lived mainly in Zurich, Trieste and Paris.

His first book Chamber Music in 1907 was a sequence of romantic poems. During this same period he wrote many of his stories about Dublin. In 1916 his A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man was published. After he finished writing Portrait, he began writing his most famous work, Ulysses, which after many years of searching for a publisher, was finally released in 1922. It took nearly 17 years for him to complete his final book Finnegans Wake.

He died in Zurich on January 13, 1941.
