Alas, the famed Jaguar Cars factory at Browns Lane, on the outskirts of Coventry, is no more.
Fortunately, however, the building housing the Jaguar Daimler Heritage Trust and the Jaguar Heritage Museum's 160 vehicles remains -- for at least the time being. Its fabulous collection of SS Cars through XK, E-Type and XJ through to C-X75 (and an amazing collection of Daimler and Jaguar prototypes and specials) is complete. You may often see them ina citon at events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed, the Goodwood Revival and the London to Brighton Run each December.
One of Ford's last acts before it sold Jaguar and Land Rover to the Indian industrial conglomerate Tata -- admittedly an empathetic and enthusiastic family-owned conglomerate -- was to sell the Browns Lane site for a housing development. Gone are the historic assembly lines where E-Types and XK150s through to the later all-aluminium bodied XJs were carefully crafted. But the time-honoured walnut veneer makers and leather workers of the Jaguar Veneer Manufacturing Centre remain at the moment, despite the encroach of three-bedroom semi-detached brick-veneer homes today.
