There are many lovely 14th century timber-framed houses.
Ixworth was one of the Iceni tribe’s headquarters settlements.
When the Romans came they developed the ‘Ickneild Way’ and built Peddars Way which runs from Colchester through Ixworth to Holme-next-the-Sea in Norfolk.
The Romans also built an important fort here and there was a substantial civilian settlement including three villas.
The fine church of St Mary’s is decorated with flint flushwork and dates from the 14th century with additions in the 15th, 16th and 19th centuries.
