URPoint Details
St Mary's Church, (Historic Churches Trust), on a hillside, below the Chiltern Escarpment but above the 'new' village stretching along the valley floor.
Mainly of the 13th and 15th centuries, it has a tall tower with a pretty spirelet. Its interior is most appealing with handsome carvings on the Norman font from an earlier church and on the 13th century capitals in the chancel and elsewhere, a long nave and a 'weeping' chancel.
The roof has carved angels, there is an excellent Jacobean pulpit and medieval bench-end poppy heads, carved with strange half-human heads, and a 1733 Royal Arms and texts above the chancel arch. A 19th century restoration has left an unspoiled medieval atmosphere.
