Isle of Whithorn

URPoint Details

A seaside resort built on what was an island, has a nice harbour and sheltered by Isle Head.

Away to the west, on the shores of Luce Bay, and reached by a track off the Port William road nearing Glasserton is St Ninian’s Cave believed to have been used by the Saint and there are some well preserved sculptured stones and crosses.

St Ninian landed here in AD395, on his return from studying in Rome. The ruins of a plain 13th century chapel still stand claimed to be the successor of St Ninian’s Chapel erected in AD397.

On the point of the promontory are the remains of an Iron Age fort, and a late 17th century tower.
