A fertile and level Thames estuary island, extending from the Medway to the Swale estuary.

A Thames estuary island just east of the mouth of the Medway is 10m long and 5m wide with Sheerness at the northwest tip of Sheppey. Since 1959 it has been linked to the mainland by a bridge over the. The names is derived from Anglo-Saxon and means ‘sheep island’.

Especially productive during spring when common shore crabs moult. Peeler crab is best bait, followed by ragworm.

Main species caught during the warmer months are silver eels, flounder and bass.

The occasional thornback ray and smoothound are landed towards Leysdown in summer.

In winter, cod and whiting are caught from the Island’s front beaches with Barton Point a notable hotspot.

Westminster Wall and Queensborough offer excellent flounder fishing most of the year.

Dinghies encounter good mixed fishing inshore, with bass in summer.
