Isle of Islay (eye-la)
After Mull this is the largest of the Argyllshire islands lying to the north of Jura and separated by the narrow Sound of Islay.
There are beautiful hills, sandy beaches and the trout lochs of Finlaggan, Gorm and Lossit and salmon rivers like the Laggan.
To the west is the Rhinns peninsula with delightful little villages sitting in beautiful scenery dotted along the coast line.
The ruined castles of Finlaggan and Dunyveg were once held by the Lords of the Isles and there are some fine Celtic crosses to be seen.
The island is 25 miles long and 20 miles wide.
